Terms of use

The rules for using Hillbound, and what you can expect from us.

Last updated: 19 October 2026

Who we are

Hillbound is run by Steve Perry Creative Limited, trading as Anorthic Labs (“Anorthic Labs”, “we”, “us”), company number 08354632, registered in England and Wales. Our registered office is 4 Back Lane, Brown Edge, Staffordshire, ST6 8QS.

These terms apply whenever you use hillbound.app, with or without an account. By using the website, you agree to them. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your personal data.

Safety on the hills

Hillbound helps you keep track of the hills you’ve climbed. It isn’t a guide, a navigation aid or a safety service, and you shouldn’t rely on it to find your way, plan a safe route or judge whether a walk is within your ability.

Heights, drops, grid references, summit positions, maps and links to routes come from third parties and can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Ground, paths, access and conditions change. Before and during any walk:

  • carry a paper map and compass, and know how to use them;
  • check the weather forecast and conditions underfoot;
  • check that you have the right to be on the land;
  • make your own judgement about what’s safe, and turn back if it isn’t.

Hillwalking and mountaineering carry a risk of injury and death. You take part at your own risk. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law (see our liability to you).

Your account

You need an account to log ascents. To create one, you must be 13 or over and give a real email address you control. You can sign up with an email address and password, or with Google or Apple.

Keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us at [email protected] if you think someone else has used your account. You’re responsible for what happens in your account unless it’s used without your permission through no fault of your own.

You can delete your account at any time from your settings. If you signed up with Google or Apple and can’t delete it yourself, email us and we’ll do it.

Your ascents and notes

Ascents, notes and anything else you add to Hillbound stay yours. You give us permission to store them, show them to you and, if you mark an ascent public, show it to others. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from copies in backups, which are overwritten within a day.

Don’t add anything that’s unlawful, that infringes someone else’s rights, or that’s abusive or misleading. We may remove content that breaks these terms.

Using the website fairly

When you use Hillbound, you agree not to:

  • copy or download the site’s data in bulk, or scrape it, other than through normal browsing or the features we provide;
  • access the map tiles, the API or any other part of the site in a way that’s designed to get around our limits or that puts an unreasonable load on the service;
  • try to get into accounts or parts of the site you aren’t allowed into, or test, probe or break our security;
  • create accounts automatically, or create accounts to send spam or abuse others;
  • use Hillbound for anything unlawful.

Search engines and AI tools are welcome to read public pages in line with our robots.txt.

If you break these terms, we may limit, suspend or close your account. Where it’s reasonable, we’ll tell you why first.

Hill data, maps and our content

  • Hill data comes from The Database of British and Irish Hills, licensed under CC BY 4.0. You can reuse it under that licence, which asks you to credit DoBIH. It doesn’t come from us.
  • Maps are Ordnance Survey OpenData, © Crown copyright and database rights, used under the Open Government Licence. You can report a map error to Ordnance Survey with the link on each map. Hillbound isn’t affiliated with Ordnance Survey or CPRE.
  • Route links take you to other websites. We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for their content or accuracy.
  • Everything else, including the Hillbound name, logo, design, contour sheets and code, belongs to us. You may not copy it except as the law allows.

Changes to the service

Hillbound is free to use. We work to keep it available and accurate, but we don’t promise that it will always be available, free of errors or kept in its current form. We may change, add or remove features, or stop running Hillbound. If we plan to close it, we’ll give account holders at least 30 days’ notice by email, so they can ask us for a copy of their ascents.

If we introduce paid features, they’ll come with their own terms, which you’ll see and agree to before you pay. Features that are free now won’t start charging without notice.

Our liability to you

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can’t be limited or excluded by law. Your legal rights as a consumer are not affected.

Otherwise, Hillbound is provided free of charge for personal, non-commercial use, and:

  • we aren’t responsible for loss or damage that wasn’t a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill;
  • we aren’t responsible for decisions you make on the hills, or for errors in data, maps or routes provided by third parties;
  • we aren’t responsible for any business losses, as Hillbound is for personal use.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when we add features or the law changes. We’ll change the date at the top of the page, and if a change significantly affects account holders, we’ll email them before it takes effect. If you don’t agree to the new terms, you can delete your account.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts. If something goes wrong, please contact us first so we can try to put it right.
